The stems usually have 6 to 10 leaves, about 1.5 to 2 feet long, and dark green. Potatoes branch out from the underground stem.
Medicinal properties of turmeric
Here are the medicinal properties. Apart from the antiseptic properties, we all know as well as the benefits of using it in Ayurvedic beauty treatments, the use of curcumin, a phytochemical extracted from turmeric, is also used today to control cancer patients. It is said that this plant chemical stops the growth of cancer cells. However, the quality of the turmeric variety grown in India is about 2% while that of the turmeric variety grown in Sri Lanka is about 4%.
Cultivation
The best time to cultivate turmeric is during the dry season like April-March. Seedlings should be planted with a spacing of about a foot in the soil upside down. Adding soil to the top of the plant should be done from time to time so that the yellow tubers are not exposed to light. The more fertilizer you apply, the higher the yield. Therefore, it is recommended to apply organic manure every three months.
Turmeric Harvesting
Harvesting usually takes place about 8-9 months after the turmeric tubers stand up. At that time the turmeric potatoes are well ripened. During the ripening period, the leaves can be seen drying out. The best time to harvest turmeric seeds, which are usually planted in April, is next January – March. On average, one kilogram of turmeric can yield 10-15 kg.
Harvested turmeric should be thoroughly cleaned and boiled in boiling water or steam for 30-45 minutes. Boiled turmeric should be dried for 5 days in the sun and then in the sun for 10 days to prevent sun exposure. When the well-dried turmeric is shaken together, a metallic sound is heard. Then you have to carefully remove the peel of the boiled and dried yolks and grind them as required.
